Keeping Dental Instruments Sterile

All but one patient treated at Australia’s Bundaberg Hospital dental health clinic has returned a negative result for blood-borne viruses.  The treatment stemmed from a problem which occurred in the cleaning process of dental instruments.  Some of the instruments used were thought to be unsterile, and thus, tests were carried out to see if an infectious viral disease was passed on to any of the patients.  This makes you wonder whether or not the dentists were using high quality disinfectant sprays or wipes.  Before going any further, I will simply say that it’s always important to use a medical grade disinfectant.

As reported by Herald & Weekly Times: The results for the final patient are expected tomorrow.  Thirty-three patients were treated at Bundaberg Hospital’s dental health clinic on November 6, the day a problem occurred in the cleaning process for dental instruments.   Two were not treated with instruments, but Queensland Health tested the remaining 31 patients for Hepatitis A, B and C and HIV.

The tests were done to determine whether any of them might have passed on an infectious viral disease to anyone of 235 patients treated the following week.   Queensland Health initially said the 31 patients visited the clinic “prior” to the bungle occurring.   However, yesterday, they admitted some of the 31 patients may have also been operated on with unclean instruments, as it is believed the cleaning mishap occurred at about 10am (AEST) on November 6.

Queensland Health director-general Mick Reid said the issue had been complex, but admitted his department should have been more clear in communication.   “While we are confident there is a very minimal risk to patients, we know this is a difficult time for them,” Mr. Reid said.  He said he would be placing the highest importance on getting to the bottom of what occurred.  “What occurred was not good enough and I apologize for any confusion and distress caused by this episode,” he said. “Yesterday I directed that Queensland’s chief dental officer assume operational control of the oral health services for the northern cluster of the Sunshine Coast-Wide Bay Health Service District, while the issues that have arisen are examined.  I hope that this action will go some way to restoring the community’s confidence in the services provided by the Bundaberg oral health service.”

The above article reminds us that it’s always important to be sterile.  Keeping clean can usually be as simple as using a high grade disinfectant spray or even disinfectant wipes.  It is important to use a medical grade disinfectant – one that is certified to kill H1N1, MRSA, Hepatitis, HIV, and other bacteria and viruses.  Most over the counter disinfectants are not strong enough to kill these germs.  Remember, a good disinfectant cleaner can mean the difference between passing and not passing a deadly disease.  Stay sterile and use high grade spays and wipes.

body fat in your body. With the exception of reducing
your calories, you are really just eating less (which
most people should do anyway) and losing water weight
(which may or may not be healthy.

RISKS AND SAFETY

In addition, there are a lot of red flags about the safety of
a low carb diet. Very little is known about the health of
these diets because they are all relatively new, however a
few things can be garnered simply by common sense:

1. Carbohydrates are necessary for energy. Most likely
if you are now eating enough carbohydrates, you are
not exercising much, in which case while you may look
healthy, your heart and muscles are likely very negatively
affected by the lack of physical activity.

2. High fat foods are going to be high in bad fats, as
well as cholesterol, which can cause some severe health
problems, including increased risk for heart attack and
high blood pressure.

3. Carbohydrates have always been a part of your life,
since early man. Taking them out of your diet altogether
can potentially cause a number of health problems down
the road even beyond the increased heart attack risk
- and these will not be known because the diets are too
new to research over the long term.

While these diets have shown some strong efficacy, they
have potential risks. In general, a low fat, high exercise
diet is going to be healthier, and poses no known risks
in the short or long term.

If you’ve read much of my stuff, you know that I do go on–and on–about the evils of soy.

Why is soy bad? Besides stealing all your minerals, giving you kidney stones and depressing your thyroid function something fierce, soy is, among other things, estrogenic. That is, it adds bogus estrogen to your system. The bogus estrogen takes over, your real estrogen becomes homeless and wanders around causing problems.

Read on to see what I mean by ‘problems.’ Scary stuff.

And soy isn’t the only thing that floods us with pseudo estrogen. Flaxseed is estrogenic. Agribusiness beef is more and more so. So is the BPA plastic that coats the interior of canned foods and beverages–and is also used to make baby bottles and teething rings. (Why does anybody think babies need estrogen?)

And some of the plastics that bottled water, etc., comes in cause troubles. If the triangular recycle code on the bottom of the bottle or container–and they don’t always make it obvious–has a 1, 3 or 7 in it, it’s bad stuff.

Also, hold on to your hats folks, now they find that dairy products also pump estrogen into us. Most milk and other dairy products come from high-production dairies. In the last thirty years or so, these factories have nearly tripled the milk output per cow by keeping the cows constantly pregnant. Besides making them unhealthy, this raises estrogen levels in the cow’s milk astronomically.

Lots of studies point to heavy use of dairy products as a cause of endocrine (breast, prostate, etc.) cancers. And what’s “heavy use?” For an adult male, two or three glasses of milk a day.

Here’s how it goes: Your body squirts out dabs of the hormone estrogen from emitter cells. The estrogen wanders through your system until it finds receptor cells that fit. Then it does a key-in-the-lock sort of thing, at which point it can get to work. At least, that’s how it supposed to go.

Things change when false estrogen shows up. The bogus estrogen finds the receptor cells and jumps in; it fits, but it doesn’t work. Meanwhile, the real stuff has nowhere to go and no way to work. Havoc ensues.

Too much of this nonsense, and you become estrogen dominant, a very bad thing to become. For women, estrogen dominance means everything affected by estrogen–and what isn’t?–goes haywire. PMS, endometriosis, painful periods, and on, and on. Including breast cancer.

In men, estrogen dominance starts turning testosterone into estrogen, a bad thing if only because you can grow breasts. And lose your libido. And so forth, including prostate cancer.

Boys end up going through life with low testosterone levels.

Girls go from diapers to puberty in a trice–and start in with the PMS, etc.

Bogus estrogen throws the entire endocrine system into a tizzy. Other glands try to get everything back in balance again, but they go down to defeat like a bunch of dominos.

Forty years ago or so, endocrine problems hit 20% of us–one in five. Now endocrine problems take down 50% of us–one in two.

Forty years ago, soy wasn’t in 60% of our food. Plastics didn’t damage us. And milk was still good for us.

We need to figure ut what we can do about this mess. Bogus estrogen isn’t the only thing that drags down our health, but it’s huge, and if we don’t fight back, it’ll get worse.

But at least there’s hope in dairyland. Get your dairy products from a family farm that treats its cows well–letting them feed on grass instead of cramming them full of grains and antibiotics, follows a humane schedule of pregnancies and the like, or consider goats’ milk. It tastes quite similar to cows’ milk, and the farms are not factories.
